Gen Zers are Rewriting the Script of the Human Gender

For Gen Zers, identity is an ever-evolving mélange of intersectional, multi-hyphenated descriptions their parents could never have dreamed of.

Identity Nomads

Gen Zers are the most global, connected generation ever, privy to ideas and ideals that traverse the world at the speed of social media. They constantly evaluate unprecedented amounts of information and influences. For them, the self is a place to experiment, test, and change. The key point is to experiment with different ways of being themselves and to shape their individual identities over time In this respect, you might call them “identity nomads.”

But there are some Gen Zers who hold conservative views aligned with traditional gender norms more commonly held by older generations.

The New Demographics

This generation is more diverse than ever. They are better educated than previous generations and similar to millennials in their views and concerns on climate change and gender issues, Gen Zers recognizes a wide range of abilities and identities as just another variation of the “normal” human experience—and they’re increasingly demanding that culture, society and, yes, brands do the same.

Gen Zers are at the leading edge of changing ideas about gender identity. Gen Zers think gender doesn’t define a person as much as it used to. Gen Zers do not want to be put in a box. For them, Identity labels do not help define who they really are. Gen Zers feel that people should be able to use any identity label with which they feel comfortable. Gen Zers identify as neutral on the spectrum of masculinity and femininity. An idea that gender falls on a sliding scale, with each person resting at different points of the spectrum at different points in life.
